I received an email last week that to had to share…
According a Wall Street Journal article from a couple weeks ago, successful international adoption of babies and children by Americans has hit a 30-year low, contributing (along with a number of other factors) to unprecedented difficulty, costs, and waiting times for American families hoping to adopt a baby, either internationally domestically. As a result, thousands of prospective adoptive parents have taken to social media in increasingly creative ways to help in their search for expectant mothers considering adoption.
Word-of-mouth and networking have become the greatest tools for families hoping to adopt, as the traditional route of agency adoption is now often fraught with exorbitant fees, increasingly lengthy waits, and fierce competition.
It’s a story that needs to be shared, as millions of Americans are misinformed about the modern face of adoption, and the challenges and personal triumphs of families negotiating these uncharted waters. Susanah Doucet writes:
My husband and I are currently engaged in the domestic adoption process and have experienced these challenges first-hand as we endeavor to create a family. We considered both international and domestic adoption, but were warned repeatedly that “international adoption is basically over,” as one lawyer put it. And we’ve met dozens of other couples and singles in the same boat, sharing advice, encouragement, laughs, and tears along the way.
